Getting Back To our Roots
Learning, Growing, & Guiding Along the Way
Our mission is to inspire sustainable living and a return to agriculture by creating immersive educational experiences that empower families to reconnect with the land and secure a sustainable future.
What we do?
Our goal at Sunset Acres Homestead is to return to agriculture as it was in the early 1900s. When I started this endeavor improving soil health was my top priority. My focus then became creating a homestead system that was set up to reduce daily workloads by utilizing modern technology that would sustain my own family. We then developed an ecotourism experience that is intended to inspire others to create their own homestead. We do this by offering a hands-on view of what we do day to day on the homestead to live more sustainably. Finally, we offer a farm to table experience that showcases our farm raised meat and produce.

Modern homesteaders strive for freedom and work to create our best lives. You can start this from anywhere and don’t have to sell everything and move to a farm in the country. The goal is to “move away” from industrial systems. This starts with looking at our food systems and ways to make small changes to make healthier choices for your family. Take a look at the medical system and begin to look at food as medicine. The electrical and water systems where you can look to create your own energy systems and sustainable water systems. Start Slowly, little by little you will gain the skills and knowledge needed to gain the freedom you desire.
-
Start off slowly! No need to burnout trying to implement too many changes at once. Change your mindset. Be confident that you are taking small steps in the right direction for the health of your family. Start with cooking from scratch, making your own bread, preserving your own food on a small scale. Seek out people doing the same things and be open to learning. Know that there is a large community of people out there doing it! We hope you feel supported in your efforts to create your best life!

Human beings depend on good soil, water, and sunshine for growing food. That said, many of our ancestors worked themselves half to death on their land, trying to stay alive. As cities developed and expanded, many chose to abandon farm life for a more comfortable urban existence instead. Of course, t’s easier to buy supplies rather than make our own or do the back-breaking labor in the fields.
Many people have become disillusioned with aspects of modern life. Sure, there are a lot of conveniences, but there are many negative sides to each of them.
We sincerely believe that buying nutrient dense food from the grocery store is impossible. Modern agriculture and western medicine are a business. We are the customers that are being sold products that are slowly killing us. We believe in the idea of knowing your grower and what they are using. We like to implement a chain of custody on most all the products we buy that we can’t produce. Without your health you have nothing. So starting today…What can you do to start eating and drinking nutrient dense foods that feed your mind body and soul?!
What You’ll Find at Sunset Acres Homestead
Who We Are…
I’m Patrick Jacques, owner of Sunset Acres Homestead. I have lived in Northeast Michigan for most of my life. I grew up in this neighborhood and always enjoyed being outside and appreciate all our wonderful seasons. Following high school, I went off to school and studied forestry and graduated with a degree in forest technology. I came back and worked with my father in a forestry business he started back in the 1970s. As I spent more time working close to the land and meeting a variety of different groups of landowners, i became quite evident that if you want your family to be able to live in such a gorgeous non populated area for generations, you must live closer to the land and be sustainable. At that time, I was practicing sustainable forestry, gardening and raising chickens.
In a blink of an eye, I had three girls. I was afforded the opportunity to buy this homestead in June of 2017. We got to work building the barn and fence and brought the cattle in 2018. Once they were brought in the adventure to start improving the land and soils began. I then convinced my girls it would be a great idea to build our own retirement home out of the wood from our property, so the Sunset Heights or little house on the edge of the big woods home project started. We now use this as a rental opportunity and to bring those interested a closer look at what homesteading could look like for their families!
In the recent years we have created a homestead environment that teaches my girls teamwork, problem solving, communication skills and work ethic. These traits are somewhat rare in this society, but I would like to believe that we have planted the seed in these girls’ minds of the importance to live closer to the land. I can see the roots forming and I know there will be disappointments in the future at times, but I have Fatih that they will have good stable roots that will guide them in the right direction to living a more fulfilling sustainable life.
